SC rejects PIL against Sethu project - chennaionline.com

New Delhi, May 28: The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a public interest litigation (PIL) opposing the ongoing Sethusamudram project, proposed to be implemented by destroying 'Ram Sethu' a mythical bridge said to be situated southeast of Rameswaram, connecting Talaimanar coast of Sri Lanka.

The court said that any objection regarding the project could be placed before the authorities dealing with it.

"We are not experts. You can approach the appropriate authority with your objections," a Bench comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice D K Jain said while declining to entertain the petition.

At the outset, the court said there are two orders by two Benches of the apex court dismissing similar petitions against Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP), with a remark that they were "misconceived".

The Bench, hearing a PIL filed by Swami Sri Vidyananda Bharatiji, a Dandi seer of the Sankaracharya Order and local resident of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, now residing at Tirunelveli, wanted to know from his counsel whether he had at any point drew the attention of the government with the objections.

"When you have not done (representation to the authority) how can we issue direction?" the Bench asked.
